Are you wondering what Silipads are? Totally awesome, that's what! Here is another product I wish we had Clara-Bear was a baby. Clara-Bear was a late crawler and a late walker. She started crawling at 15 months, and was over 3 years old when she started walking full time. Her little shins and knees were so bruised!

clara crawling

I know, you're probably looking at that picture of 2 year old Clara-Bear crawling on concrete and thinking, "Mama Bear, I can tell you why she was bruised up." After about 6 months of no progress, I had to start letting go or my protectiveness would hold her back. She needed to crawl so she could grow strong enough to walk. She finally wanted to explore and bruising was a sad part of exploring.

As a Registered Nurse, I know that baby knees are designed differently than adult knees. They are looser and softer so crawling on hard surfaces is not as painful for them as it is for us. But that doesn't mean that they don't need protecting from hard surfaces. And I don't know what happens when a toddler is crawling after the infant years - do the knees remain flexible, or do they change so that crawling becomes more uncomfortable? Clara-Bear was not refusing to walk - she could not walk. If crawling hurt, that discomfort would not suddenly make her legs and hips stronger. Her only option would be to stop crawling!

Shopping for baby kneepads was a waste of time. I couldn’t find any! I started making my own knee pad/shin guard inserts that could be velcroed into the inside of her leggings. Unbeknownst to me, around this same time, two Moms founded Silikids. Guess what their first product was? Silipads! Silicone kneepads for babies and wobbly walkers. I so would have bought these if I knew about them back then:

silipads kneepads

Silikids products are designed to be safe, functional, easy to use, and clean. Silicone was selected as the ideal material to meet these goals. Silicone is naturally hypoallergienic, non-porous (germs and mold will not grow on it), and easy to clean. Silicone is as fun as it is durable. If you have an imagination and know how to solve problems, than the sky's the limit with what you can create with silicone. Silikids is maxing out silicone creativity!

A lot of parents are returning to glass baby bottles because of concerns that BPA's and other unsafe materials leach out of plastic. But drinking glasses for toddlers? Are you worried that a Siliskin protective cover is not enough to make glass safe around your child? If Siliskins are strong enough to stand up to this one year old, then they are strong enough to stand up to your toddler!

We were blessed to review a Silikids 6 ounce glass and a set of Silipads kneepads.

Since Clara-Bear is no longer crawling, I sent the kneepads to Baltimore for my sister to try with my nephew, who is still crawling at age 3. The website says One Size Fits Most, but my nephew was too large for the kneepads at 35 pounds/size 4T. The fabric stretched enough to fit around his leg; in fact comfortably fits around my wrist and forearm without binding. The problem was the kneepad was not long enough to give good coverage. Since it was too short, it did not stay in place when he crawled. Clara-Bear was between 22 and 25 pounds and in sizes 18 months up to 3T when she was crawling. The Silipads look like they would have fit her fine.

Here are the dimensions if you are considering Silipads for a larger crawler:
Length (from top band to bottom band): 4 inches
Width of top and bottom band (without stretching): 2.5 inches
Width at widest point (without stretching): 3 inches
Silicone center: 2 inches by 2 inches

orange silipads

The knit part of the kneepad is soft enough to be a baby blanket and the elasticized band is smooth and flat. The color choices are trendy. And the silcone pad is just plain cool. It is so soft and easy to bend that it would not get in the way of crawling. Since it's silicone, it's also easy to clean.

The other product we reviewed was the Siliskin Glass. I didn't think my Typically Developing 3 year old cared whether he used a glass or a cup, but after he got his first glass he made it clear that he was a big kid and did not need plastic cups anymore!

Clara-Bear is still learning to drink from an open cup so I decided to let Little Brother hog the Siliskin Glass for now. I do appreciate how the silicone wrapper used on the glass and the baby bottles have holes and nubbies to make gripping easier for little hands. This will definitely make it easier for Clara-Bear to hold the Siliskin Glass. With her weak hands and poor body awareness, I would not trust her to hold any drinking glass except a Siliskins.

The protective silicone skin also provides a barrier between your child's hands and the glass. This silicone skin might help If your child has sensory issues with the glass or the cold cup. It also provides a little insulation from the cold if your child has Raynaud's or other cold sensitivity.

Like all Silikids products, our Siliskin Glass is dishwasher safe. Water collected between the skin and the glass when I put the glass/skin combo in the dishwasher. I emailed Hilary, the marketing rep to see if this was safe. She reminded me that the skin is silicone - mold can't grow in silicone! She also said I could remove the skin if I wanted to wash the glass and skin separately.

One lucky able2able reader will win a set of Silipads kneepads in their choice of color.

I am not entering this give-away as I am Anara's sister and so my son is the Elijah she was talking about who at 35+lbs and 4T was not able to use the kneepads. Maybe they will make a longer version at some point. I really loved the softness and design and the lack of bruising when they stayed in place and would definitely try them again if they were longer and for a larger child.

Since I don't need to try the pads, I am going to go ahead and order the Silicup. Anara was holding back on me - or just trying to make sure I was keeping up with her blog, because this article was the first I heard about the cup. Elijah has been using a glass cup for quite a while - I am one of those plastic paranoid moms. But he will only put one hand on it and will not "help" much even though he has the strength and even the coordination to do so. I think that this Sillicup may do the trick. With some extra security of grip I am hoping this cup will make him capable of independent (even if messy) drinking.

If this post is still up, I will let Anara know to give an additional write up from me on the cup.

  2. LOL! Sorry, sis! Keep your eye on the Silikids site, I believe they are working on a spill proof toddler glass. They are also coming out with a beautiful Siliskin covered glass travel bottle to carry your baby & toddler drinks on the go. Nothing but full disclosure in the future, I promise!
