I got so excited when I saw a review for the Pocket Purifier on the blog A to Z Medical Reviews. Living with a child with an immune disorder has made me a major germophobe. I worry about the chemicals I might be absorbing and that I am constantly introducing into our home since we use sanitizing wipes on everything that comes into our house, including groceries.
I know, I know, it sounds extreme and I'm not entirely at peace with the concept. But I saw somebody coughing into their hand then handling bananas in the store one day and I pictured my 3 year old holding and eating the same banana – I might as well let my son lick that man’s dirty, germy hand. DH saw a store employee stacking loaves of bread on the store’s floor. Dr. Doormat taught us that over 90% of germs and allergens are tracked into buildings on people's shoes. I wouldn't put dirty shoes on my table or countertop. Why would I put items that sat on the floor in an area where food is prepared? So, yeah, the groceries are wiped as they are put away and the counter tops are sanitized as well. As abnormal as this feels, it’s become normal for us.
Naturally, I have always been stressed about not being able to sanitize fabrics. The major source of this stress? The handle to Clara-Bear’s Dynavox. I wipe down the Dynavox itself everytime we take it outside of the house, but have not had a way to clean the fabric handle. I feel justified in my stress – the Dynavox goes to school with her, is carried by multiple people, touched by kids at school, and often winds up on the floor or ground for lack of a better place to put it. Then it sits on the table next to Clara-Bear as she eats and she grabs the handle to pull it closer and use it. Ugh.
I was thrilled when Purely Products sent me a Pocket Purifier and two Healthy CFL lightbulbs for review. The Pocket Purifier is a portable handheld germ eliminating light that uses UV-C, the same light used for sterilizing surgical equipment. Ultraviolet light and nanotechnology eliminate 99.9% of germs that cause colds and flu, plus e-coli, salmonella, mold, fungus and MRSA (staph). It can be used at home, at work, and in public. And it works on fabric as well as hard surfaces!
I love my little pink Pocket Purifier! Do you remember when Dr. Phil promoted a handheld UV sanitizier on his show a year or two ago? It cost over $68 and I returned mine promptly after it arrived because it was so cheap and impractical. The Purely Products Pocket Purifier is much better quality than the one endorsed on the Dr. Phil Show, customer service is much more accessible, and $29.95 is a much more affordable price. It also covers a slightly larger area than the competition (1” x 4”) and works quicker – it only takes 10 to 15 seconds of light exposure to kill germs.
I love being able to toss my Pocket Purifier into Clara-Bear’s bag with her Dynavox. It sanitizes the Dynavox, it’s handle, and the inside of the bag as we drive home from school. You can place your Pocket Purifier in a 12 inch by 24 inch opaque container and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes if you want to sanitize a larger surface. Since our backpacks wind up in places I would not put my hands, I toss these in a container and sanitize the outside of them a couple times a week. As we enter into flu season, it’s nice to know I have an environmentally friendly, chemical free way to sanitize items inside and outside my home.
I also reviewed the Healthy CFL light bulb. This innocent looking compact fluorescent lightbulb actually has an air purifier in its middle. The Healthy CFL cleans the air of cigarette smoke, pollen, mold, germs, dust, odors, pet dander and other airborne contaminants. As it cleans, the built-in ionizer also counters the draining effects of positive ions emitted every day by items like computers, cell phones, televisions, and forced air ventilation, while flowing a steady stream of refreshing negative ions into the air to boost mood and energy. Yeah, I was happy to have two of these in my home!
So does the Healthy CFL work? My Red Dog loves to sneak on the couch when we are out on Clara-Bear’s longer appointment days. I discovered he was drooling on my couch when I started coming home to a closed up house with a funky smell. Now I leave the living room light with the Healthy CFL bulbs in it and I no longer notice a dog smell or closed up stuffy smell, even with the a/c turned up to 79 degrees. Since the Healthy CFL uses 80% less energy than a traditional light bulb we have not noticed an increase in our electricity bill with the light on all day.
I also had to move my essential oil diffuser out of the living room since I could not smell my beautiful oils. And I put the Healthy CFL to the ultimate, grossest test yesterday. I changed a super-pooper diaper underneath it, turned the a/c temp up, and left the house for an hour. I was relieved not to smell poop when we returned! Since we have a houseful of asthma, allergies, and exzema, I really like knowing that allergens and triggers are being cleaned by the Healthy CFL’s along with the funk.
